“Technology is woven into everything. You can’t talk about anything these days without technology as one of the ingredients,”
Majority of people think Information Technology (IT) is all about coding and extreme technicalities, but the truth is that the field of IT offers various opportunities, not only for men, but for women as well.
You name it and we have it. One can always pick their area of interest and work in this field. I myself am a software engineer turned project manager. All you need is the right opportunity to rise and shine.
Unfortunately, in recent times, the industry has witnessed a declining number of women employed in this field. If you take a look at the records, you’ll notice there are various women working at the CEO level at places such as Intel and other renowned firms, yet, the IT industry requires more female power.
There are multiple reasons which have led to a decrease in the number of women working in the IT sector, as compared to the 90s. In my opinion, the most prominent reasons are; lack of vision, higher preference for males, less career motivation and to some extent, discrimination.
Though I also feel that the real reason behind this staggeringly low number isn’t exactly due to discrimination, harassment or unequal pay. Rather, the real reason is that most women clearly aren’t as interested in technology-related work as compared to men. Since it’s a choice, most women seem to opt for other fields.
We should give women more respect for their ability to make their own choices. For those who do have an interest in writing codes, building systems and becoming database experts, there are as many opportunities available to them in this country as men, if that is what they want to do.
